Read why League delegates from around the country voted to support single payer health care.

The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) voted during its June 23-26 national convention to update its official Health Care Position. The amended position includes clear language supporting advocacy for single payer health care. Specifically, the updated position encompasses the following principles and policy:

  • Health care should not exacerbate disparities in outcomes (DEI)
  • Separates health care access from employment
  • Explicitly allows advocating for Single Payer
  • Allows support for State bills
  • Expanded delivery options (telemedicine, etc.)
  • Safe staffing, regular evaluation
  • Decisions made by patient, family, and medical professional
  • Cost controls based on credible, evidence-based research
  • Pharmaceutical negotiation for volume discounts
  • Public participation in health care policy: transparent administration, with regular assessment
  • “Comprehensive Health Care” includes behavioral health, dental, vision, hearing
