The California Assembly on Wednesday, September 13, voted 42-15 to pass Senate Bill 770–Unified Health Care Financing. Co-authored by Senator Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and Senate Majority Leader Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, the bill supports a process for the governor’s office to take steps toward guaranteed, equitable universal healthcare coverage in California. SB 770 directs the California Health and Human Services Agency to consult with the federal government to determine the necessary details of a federal waiver application for a unified financing system such as single payer. The bill heads next to the Senate for sign-off before going to the governor for his signature.
