Join us for what promises to be a riveting two hours with economist Peter Arno, a member of the research team at the University of Massachussetts-Amherst which this summer issued a financing plan for SB 562, The Healthy California Act. The team led by Robert Pollin at the university's Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) is also working on a financing plan for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' national Medicare for All bill.

Mr. Arno will talk about the feasibility of financing a single payer healthcare system, discuss the reasoning behind his team's specific propposal for California's SB 562, and answer a range of questions from those in attendance.

Here is a link to the Pollin report. The first four pages provide a useful summary.

Holiday Meeting ~ December 5

Support the single-payer bill in the California state legislature! The Healthy California Act, SB 562 (Lara/Atkins)--co-sponsored by our own state senator, Mike McGuire--is now "resting" in the Assembly Rules committee, having passed the Senate on June 1, 2017. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon chose not to move the bill forward in the Assembly this year. The Healthy California coalition campaign is working hard to build public awareness and demand for moving the bill forward in early 2018. Please contact Assemblymembers Marc Levine (AD 10) and Jim Wood (AD 2) and let them know you support the bill and want them to work with Speaker Rendon to get the bill referred to the Health Committee as soon as possible, where it can be developed and have a public hearing. (Note: Assemblyman Jim Wood is chair of the Health Committee.)

SB 562 calls on the state to create a publicly financed system that will replace private insurance premiums and out of pocket expenses and cover all residents in the state. Now is the time! Pooled risk, one comprehensive plan, cost-efficient administration, negotiated prices...everybody in, nobody out!

You can help now... Become a dues-paying member of HCA - CA (click on Join/Renew above). Host a neighborhood conversation in your home, table at a nearby market, write a letter to the editor, invite a speaker or screen a film with your group.

Endorsements especially needed!   We need to expand the list of groups endorsing SB 562. Replacing private insurance with a publicly financed program covering everyone in one risk pool will save money for our schools, cities, counties, and special districts. We need endorsements from the elected boards that govern these institutions, as well as from businesses, which will also benefit. Health Care for All has sample letters of support and resolutions. Contact us and we will help you secure endorsements.

Get in touch and let's talk about how we are going to make history together!

Regular Meetings.  Bi-monthly chapter meetings are open to all. They are a great opportunity to meet other single payer advocates, get updates on the movement, improve your advocacy skills, and help plan public outreach activities.

When: Second Tuesday of every other month starting in February. Time: 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dates in 2017: February 14, April 11, June 13, August 8, October 10. Holiday gathering in December, details to be announced.

*Where: Corte Madera Town Center community room. Take the Tamalpais/Paradise exit off U.S. 101, head west on Tamalpais Drive, turn right into the shopping center, and right at the stop sign. Park on the right. (P.F. Chang is ahead on the left.) Enter the mall courtyard between ivy-covered pillars. The community room is on the second floor of the office building (#770) between the A.T.T. store and Barnes & Noble.

Contact us any time with questions and suggestions. If you are in another county, we can arrange to meet half way and see how to personalize your advocacy where you live.
